Personality:

Margerie excelled at her studies, and in the last couple of years teaching, she has shown signs of excellence in that as well. As a student, she suffered criticism for her softheartedness, her refusal to cut corners, and her reluctance to give up on patients. Despite these ways in which she differed from the ordinary doctors she studied with, her results rarely disappointed, and the happiness and relief of her patients after meeting with her made her feel vindicated despite the criticism. As she is now at a place where miracles occur regularly, her refusal to give up serves her very well, and she finds great happiness in the knowledge that whomever comes into the covenant of Epidauros is very likely to leave whole and healthy, even if it is often someone other than her that works the miracles.

Background:

Son of a Norman mercenary who fought in the service of Roger II of Sicily, Margerie's father wanted nothing to do with military service and fled that life to enroll at the University of Salerno. Academic success led to a family, which led to a daughter, Margerie, and she followed in her father's footsteps, succeeding academically and becoming a Physician of Salerno as he was.

Margerie, however, found that the study of academics wasn't enough, and mundane medicine failed too often. She scoured the libraries and questioned the faculty, looking for ways to further enhance her ability to save lives, and she eventually found out about a secret society of academics that were able to use magic. She pursued this line of inquiry, and was soon inducted into the Mathematicians of Bologna.

During all her career, Margerie has been plagued by the romantic interest of her fellow scholars. While women study at Salerno, it is not common, and so she has always endured a lot of unwanted attention; she has often wished that she was dumpy and plain, so she would be left alone to pursue her goal of helping people as much as she can.

After she graduated, it became worse, now her career was in full swing, and more than ever she was seen as a great catch and pursued relentlessly by recent graduates and younger professors. She became increasingly desperate to get out of the city, overpopulated as it was with ambitious, eligible young men; and she was fortunate enough to meet with a woman who was visiting the university, recruiting for a mysterious posting in a place near a remote greek city. Vouched for by some of the Mathematici, the woman promised that the position was rewarding and challenging, that she would be accepted as a female doctor, and most importantly, that the location was remote, not in the middle of a city or near a university; so with those assurances, Margerie provisionally accepted the offer of employment.

Since then, for the last year and a half, Margerie has been a resident at the Hermetic covenant of Epidauros. She is surrounded with interesting work and intelligent colleagues, and not surrounded by young doctors looking for wives, so she views the decision as a good one, even if she does find the company of her new employers unsettling, and is a bit annoyed that nobody speaks proper civilized Latin. So when the provisional year ran out, and she was invited to stay on permanently, she accepted.
